Letter: Hatch better beware before going against Trump on immigration

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune The Salt Lake Chamber honors Sen. Orrin G. Hatch as the 39th Giant in Our City, in honor of his service and professional achievement, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Grand America Hotel.

After reading Tuesday’s article that our Sen. Orrin Hatch was going to draft a letter to stop President Trump’s policy of separating migrant families at the border, my heart sank to the bottom of my stomach.

With retirement coming up so soon, how could you risk tainting your stellar career by going against the wishes of the greatest president you have ever served? I hope you’re reading this, because if you ruffle this president’s feathers, he’ll come back on you tenfold. He may even still be holding a grudge that you didn’t run again and let Mitt Romney into the game.

So Orrin, please retire gracefully, with dignity, and support Trump’s wishes. After all, wealthy men like Trump become hard to please, being exposed to so much luxury, and if separating immigrant families brings him some joy, so be it. He is the president. Not to mention Jeff Sessions clearly has a Napoleon complex, and for all the grief the president has given him, he deserves to take some joy in seeing the little ones traumatized.

It’s a new set of values for the GOP. This era isn’t George H.W. Bush’s family values. It’s Trump’s party values. Pittsburgh is calling you home now, Orrin.
