Letter: A misdirected fundraising request from Rep. Mia Love

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Congresswoman Mia Love speaks to the Salt Lake Tribune editorial board Thursday Feb. 22 2018.

Considering myself a moderate Democrat, I was surprised to receive a misdirected fundraising request from Rep. Mia Love. Complaining that her opponent will be “funded by the liberal Washington, D.C. special interests,” she has failed to move me by her request for my financial support.

Will the Republican billionaire PACs pass her by? I doubt it. She is the Republican minority poster congresswoman that Democrats and Republicans acknowledge her to be. Good for her and for all of us.

The trouble is, up until now, her efforts to push moderate immigration issues are stalled in committee and will go nowhere with her right-wing colleagues. Meanwhile, she has been swept into the Republican agenda of an increase of $1.5 trillion in additional federal debt.

Later, she may reluctantly or enthusiastically be a party to balancing federal budgets, not by raising revenue, but by attacking and reducing benefits for Social Security and Medicare, because that’s where the money is (as the 1930s bank robber said).

Sorry Mia, but I like the Salt Lake County mayor.
