Letter: Only assault weapon lovers talk about eradicating Second Amendment

(AP Photo/Mike Stewart) People participate in a gun-rights rally as a second amendment flag is carried at the state capitol, Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Atlanta. About 40 gun rights supporters have gathered for one of dozens of rallies planned at statehouses across the U.S.

Wade Miller states, “there has been a considerable discussion concerning eradicating the Second Amendment.” This could not be further from the truth. My son and I had the honor of participating in the March For Our Lives a few weeks ago and the actual discussion was about stronger background checks with a focus on mental health, licensing and registration (similar to driving and registering a car), getting rid of the gun-show loophole, and taking a good look at the purpose and value of semi-automatic assault weapons.

Ironically, the only people even mentioning eradicating the Second Amendment are a tiny minority of semi-automatic assault weapon lovers. Why would this pro-gun group focus on eradication, rather than on a few reasonable regulations (as the Second Amendment clearly states and intended)? Fear, as usual.

The NRA continues to spread propaganda that the big bad government is coming for your guns. This lie helps the gun manufacturers sell more guns, which in turn funds the NRA. The majority of American voters are absolutely begging for regulation, not eradication. I’m hoping the election in November will make this quite clear as we vote the NRA out of public office.
