Letter: We want the Second Amendment enforced, not ignored

(David J. Phillip | The Associated Press) Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, center, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, far right, join demonstrators during a "March for Our Lives" protest for gun legislation and school safety Saturday, March 24, 2018, in Houston. Turner has told several thousand people demonstrating for stricter gun control that adults have a responsibility to stand up and protect all children.

In answer to the, “How ironic” opinion letter by D. A. Dungan (Salt Lake Tribune, April 3), yes we did notice those guarding us as we marched at the national protests. We noticed, appreciated and thanked the “well-regulated militia” guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. Why was that militia present? We assumed they stood to protect against unruly persons as well as against any threats we may have experience by those carrying poorly regulated firearms.

You are correct in observing the presence of irony, but it was not as your letter suggested. We notice the irony of those who claim the sanctity of the Second Amendment but refuse to listen to proposals for regulation. We notice the irony of folks who refuse to hear our cries that we want automatic weapons regulated, and are not asking that all guns be outlawed. In case you are listening now, we want the Second Amendment enforced, not ignored. We agree to a well-regulated militia, but not to rampant, unregulated use of weapons of all calibers.

In the future, please listen. That is the first step to open, effective communications which will lead to improving our nation.
