Letter: Per GOP reasoning, let’s put a high tax on everything gun-related

Legislators in Utah say that they are looking for ideas regarding guns and school safety. Here’s one: Take a page from the Republican handbook regarding health insurance. They tell us that anyone can have health insurance as long as they can pay for it. It’s called “access.” They don’t tell us that some premiums have risen so high that the common person cannot afford them.

The same thing can apply to guns. Why not put a high tax on guns, ammo clips and other gun-related accessories and activities? These tax funds would pay for school safety programs. The tax scale could be adjusted to the type of weapon being sold.

People say that our conservative Legislature would never go for such an idea, but as a retired school administrator with 31 years of experience in our Utah schools, I say that we need to think outside the gun box if history is not going to repeat itself.
