Letter: We apologize if we misunderstood lawmaker’s position on Utah schools and taxes

(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Mike Schultz, R-Hooper on the floor of the House of Representatives at the State Capitol in Salt Lake City on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018.

In our commentary piece that ran on Feb. 14, we quoted Rep. Mike Schultz’s statement as reported in The Salt Lake Tribune, saying: “Schultz believes that ‘The public will like this,’ ” referring to his bill that would negate the Our Schools Now initiative.

Rep. Schultz has informed us that this quote was used incorrectly. He told us that what he said was: “I and others are working to get similar amounts of money to education over a three- to four-year period without having the largest tax increase in our state’s history.”

We acknowledge Rep. Schultz’s point, and we apologize if we misquoted his comment to The Salt Lake Tribune.
