Letter: If you need 30 or more rounds to kill a deer, here's what you really need

I have owned guns for 50 years and, as some of the other letter writers, I was trained to use assault weapons in the Army. I still remember the instructor saying, “This weapon (M-16) is not for ‘popping’ squirrels or shooting deer. It is for killing and injuring the enemy.” It is designed to kill people.

Any hunter who needs 30 or more rounds to kill a deer doesn’t need a high-capacity magazine, they need rifle training and practice.

I see no logical reason why civilians should have access to assault weapons or high-capacity magazines. Sure, a disturbed person can kill someone with a baseball bat, but they can’t kill 18 people (in minutes) with a bat. Maybe we can start reasonable gun control by limiting access to military weapons and accessories.
