Letter: Excellence concert series chucked for Twilight? That’s a shoddy move.

Wow, talk about trading down! Salt Lake’s City Council pre-empted the fine, long-running Excellence in the Community concert series at Gallivan Center on Thursday nights — to revive the pitiful Twilight series formerly at Pioneer Park.

Excellence showcases world-class Utah artists, many of whom have performed at the premier jazz festivals, the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as playing with the country’s top recording stars. And it’s all free, supported by local foundations, families and banks, law firms and Daynes Music.

The Gallivan Center provided the venue to bring quality entertainment and to energize the city’s downtown all year.

Where is the wisdom in charging $10 to flood downtown with an audience requiring extra security, cleanup and advertising, all to hear bands-du-jour of dubious talent? Salt Lake should stick with quality.
