Letter: Why is Romney, a man with integrity, so abhorrent to Republicans?

(Rick Bowmer | The Associated Press)In this Feb. 16, 2018, photo, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sits behind the wheel of a tractor during a tour of Gibson's Green Acres Dairy in Ogden, Utah. If Romney becomes Utah's next senator, many Republicans are looking to the him to take up John McCain's mantle as an elder statesman, willing to take on Donald Trump and serve as a political and moral counterweight to a president they see as divisive and undignified.

I’m at a loss to understand what exactly Rob Anderson, the Utah GOP chairman, has against Mitt Romney.

Romney has lived in Utah, does own homes here (several, I believe) and certainly represents Utah values far more than Orrin Hatch or his ilk.

Perhaps it’s that he’s an outspoken critic of a corrupt president and administration that daily defiles the standards and ethics of decency. Why is a man with some integrity and honor so abhorrent to current Republicans?

Might the greater question be why it’s so critical for Republicans to fall in line now, when the basic fundamentals of our Constitution are in jeopardy? Republicans might scream about the Second Amendment, but completely disregard the emoluments clause or concern over treasonous behavior. What happened to the war chant about fiscal conservancy and a balanced budget that we heard relentlessly over the eight years President Obama was in office?

Mitt Romney’s value to Utah shouldn’t be judged on how he has taken a stand against an evil fraud. He should be commended for it.
