Letter: We should all drive 55

Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune UDOT's Stephan Foster installs a new 70 mph speed limit sign over a 65 mph sign on I-80 near 5600 West in Salt Lake City, Monday, Dec. 8, 2014.

What a respite from the freeway it is to drive leisurely at 55 mph and without the threatening masses of the semis all around. Thanks and congrats to those who were thinking about the Legacy Highway and its impacts on marshy lands, the birds and the people who drive it. The Legislature seems to have the health of the drivers on the freeway on its mind lately by reducing the alcohol level, thereby reducing harm caused by accidents they tell us.

However, while driving this pleasant road, another, more immediate health measure becomes crystal clear. The hybrid I drive provides this information: The longer I drive around 55 mph, the more miles per gallon are reached! So, the speed of 55 mph increases the distance traveled on the same amount of gas, and reduces air pollution! Less gas burned, less fossil fuel CO2 and other bad particles in our air!

Dear legislators and other thinkers in a position to wield influence, the answer is clear, precise and right in front of you. Reduce the speed limit to 55 mph in urban areas; reduce pollution and illness associated with it. Help us to breathe clean air!
