Letter: Making the case for concealed carry

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune File Photo) The free class turned away more than 50 people, said concealed firearms instructor Clark Aposhian during the OPSGEAR¨ and the Utah Shooting Sports Council's free Concealed Carry Weapons Class and Mass Violence Response Training at the Maverik Center, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, in West Valley City. In Utah, teachers with a concealed-carry permit can already carry firearms into classrooms. The course is open to all school employees — teachers, bus drivers, principals and custodians.

We Americans have the highest gun ownership in the world but had fewer shooting victims per million population than Norway, Finland, Slovakia, Israel and Switzerland, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in a recent year.

On the other hand, in the past few years, gun-free U.S. campuses yielded 11 killed and 15 wounded in six mass murders.

I would rather have concealed carry than open carry, as open carry is a distraction in public places — like someone clomping down the baking aisle in downhill boots.
