Here’s who could replace Rep. Stewart in Congress

Utah’s special primary election for Stewart’s congressional seat is on Sept 5, with the special general election happening on Nov. 21.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Incumbent Chris Stewart, Representative for Utah's 2nd Congressional District, won the nomination at the Utah Republican Nominating Convention Saturday, April 21, 2018. Stewart is resigning from Congress on Sept. 15, 2023, and will be replaced during a special election.

Utah will host a special election later this year to replace Rep. Chris Stewart, who is leaving Congress on Sept. 15. The congressman said he is resigning because of health concerns with his wife.

Republicans Celeste Maloy and Becky Edwards have already qualified for the primary election. They could be joined by Bruce Hough, who is waiting for election officials to verify he submitted the needed 7,000 signatures to gain a spot in the primary.

The Republican primary will be held on Sept. 5, with the special election occurring on Nov. 21. Utah’s 2023 municipal election will also happen on Nov. 21, having been pushed back to accommodate the special election.
