Number of new COVID-19 cases in Utah rises back above 1,100

After three consecutive days new coronavirus cases reported in the hundreds, that number rose well into four figures again on Thursday. The Utah Department of Health recorded 1,151 new case of COVID-19.

The state also reported seven more deaths — six of those were Utahns ages 65 and older.

Vaccinations reported in past day/total vaccinations • 12,540 / 563,608.

Number of Utahns who have received two doses • 179,458.

Cases reported in past day • 1,151.

Deaths reported in past day • Seven.

Salt Lake County reported three deaths — all men between the ages of 65 and 84.

Four other counties each reported one death — a woman 65 to 84 in Cache County, a man 45 to 64 in Grand County, a man 85-plus in Utah County, and a woman 65 to 84 in Weber County.

Hospitalizations reported in past day • 258. That’s down five from Wednesday. Of those currently hospitalized, 105 are in intensive care units — six more than Wednesday.

Tests reported in past day • 8,121 people were tested for the first time. A total of 21,055 people were tested.

Percentage of positive tests • Under the state’s original method, the rate is 14.2%. That’s slightly higher than the seven-day average of 13.6%.

Its new method counts all test results, including repeated tests of the same individual. Thursday’s rate is now at 5.5%, lower than the seven-day average of 6.25%.
