A child shot and killed a 5-year-old at a home in Sandy, police said.

Sandy police were called to the home just before 1 p.m. after the child was reported to have been shot, said Sgt. Michael Olsen, spokesperson for the department.

Paramedics transported the 5-year-old to the hospital, but, police say, the child later died. Officers spoke with the people they say were involved with the shooting, and “after investigating, we were able to determine this was a tragedy involving young children.”

Olsen declined to provide the age of the child who fired the gunshot or say if there was any further investigation into how the child got the gun.

“We do urge everyone to be careful with firearms and we give our sincere condolences to the grieving family,” he said.

A report by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health looking at 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that gunshots were the leading cause of death for children between ages 1-17.
