Another Republican incumbent on the Salt Lake County Council won’t be on the ballot this fall.

Laurie Stringham, who serves as a countywide member on the panel, lost to challenger Kathleen Anderson at the Salt Lake County GOP nominating convention on Saturday. Anderson captured 69% of the 1,100 votes cast by delegates.

Because Anderson received more than 60% of the votes, she will not compete in a primary and will advance directly to the general election.

Stringham said it’s been an honor serving constituents over her term, which will continue through the end of the year.

“All the constituents I had a chance to talk to became supporters once they understood how the county budget works and why we have to make decisions we make, and that government isn’t easy,” Stringham said. “Not everybody gives you that opportunity to talk to them. And so, it’s unfortunate we weren’t able to get to more people.”

Anderson is a business owner and Republican activist who ran unsuccessfully for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District in 2023, while Stringham has served on the council since 2021.

“This wasn’t just a win for one campaign; it was a clear signal that Salt Lake County is ready for a new direction,” Anderson said in a statement. “… I am running on accountability, regardless of party affiliation. County residents are demanding better than the disappointments they have received from the status quo. I look forward to taking this message of reform to every corner of the county.”

Anderson will compete against four other candidates in this fall’s election: Democratic nominee Zach Robinson, a former Sandy City Council member; Utah Forward Party candidate Maleah Bliss Caulford, a business owner who ran unsuccessfully for state Senate District 11 in December; Constitution Party candidate Gregory Belgarian; and Olghen Ocean Saintelus, an unaffiliated candidate.

The county’s legislative body is currently controlled by Republicans in a 5-4 majority. Two other GOP members decided not to run for reelection this year: Aimee Winder Newton and Sheldon Stewart.

Winder Newton represents District 3, which includes Taylorsville, Murray and parts of West Valley City and West Jordan, while Stewart represents District 5, which includes a southwest portion of Salt Lake County.

One other County Council seat is up for grabs this fall: District 1, which includes most of Salt Lake City. Democrat Jiro Johnson will seek to retain his seat representing the council’s most liberal district after he replaced former council member Arlyn Bradshaw last spring.
