Fatal I-15 wrong-way crash suspect charged with murder, sexual abuse

The man accused of driving the wrong way on Interstate 15 last month and crashing into another car, killing the two teenagers inside, has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of forcible sexual abuse stemming from an alleged assault before the wreck.

Jose Angel Torres Jimenez, 21, was arrested immediately following the crash in the overnight hours of Nov. 29.

According to court documents, Jimenez was heading southbound in the northbound lanes on I-15 near 2100 South when he crashed head-on into the teens’ Nissan Rogue, which burst into flames. Both 17-year-old Anneka Wilson and 18-year-old Leo Shepherd died at the scene.

Last week, the Salt Lake City Police Department said Jimenez was accused of sexual assault in the minutes before he is suspected of driving the wrong way on I-15. On Monday, he was also charged with aggravated assault resulting in a loss of consciousness, a second-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

Jimenez was also charged with misdemeanor DUI involving traveling the wrong way on a highway and an infraction for violation of a learner’s permit.
