Murray police shoot at man who rammed patrol car near Fashion Place mall

The man managed to drive away, but he was later arrested in Colorado.

(Murray City Police Department) Murray police say the driver of this suspected stolen vehicle rammed a police car and hit a parked vehicle before a police shooting Wednesday near Fashion Place mall. The driver was later arrested Thursday near Denver.

A Murray police officer shot at a suspected car thief who reportedly rammed a police car while escaping from authorities on Wednesday evening.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was later taken into custody near Denver early Thursday by Colorado authorities, Murray police announced Thursday afternoon.

According to police, at about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers stopped a car with stolen Indiana license plates in a parking lot near Fashion Place mall, near 6200 S. State Street. When they tried to take the driver into custody, he drove away, hitting a police car and a parked vehicle.

As the man was making his escape, one police officer “fired at the driver, who may have suffered potential injury,” according to a news release from Murray police. Upon his Thursday arrest, it was determined that the man was injured during the police confrontation, but his wounds were considered survivable.

A Murray officer involved in the confrontation suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a hospital, police said. Police did not say how the officer was injured.

That officer was placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into the police shooting.

Murray police said West Jordan police are assisting in the investigation, and in a statement Thursday, they thanked Colorado law enforcement for apprehending the man.

More information was not immediately available Thursday afternoon.

According to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune, this marked the 17th law enforcement shooting in Utah so far this year.
