Officers arrived at a “large and chaotic” scene.

(SLCPD) Two SLCPD patrol cars are parked in a parking lot near 100 West and 300 South following a deadly shooting Sunday, September 3, 2023.

Salt Lake City police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened early Sunday downtown, according to a news release.

At about 4 a.m., police received a 911 call about a person who was shot in a parking lot between Pierpont Avenue and 300 South, just west of West Temple.

When officers arrived at the “large and chaotic” scene, they found community members performing life-saving efforts on a man. Officers took over those efforts, but the man died at the scene. He was later identified as 35-year-old Anetone Simanu.

Officers arrested two people for reportedly interfering with the investigation, the release said.

Detectives are working to identify the shooter, the release said, and no arrests connected to the shooting have been made. The shooting doesn’t seem to have been random, police said, and there is no danger to the public.

Police are asking that anyone who has information about the shooting, including photos or videos, to call 801-799-3000.
