Man dies at Central Utah Prison facility

The man’s death is under investigation, officials said.

(Utah Department of Corrections) A man died Saturday after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Central Utah Prison in Gunnison.

A man died Saturday after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Central Utah Prison in Gunnison, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Corrections.

The man’s cellmate alerted correctional officers when he noticed the man was not moving, officials said in the release. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead just after 10:30 a.m., according to the release.

The man’s identity was withheld pending notification to his family. The Utah Department of Corrections’ Law Enforcement Bureau and the Utah State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the man’s death, officials said.

The prison is currently on lockdown, according to the release. An Aug. 21 fight at the prison involving 15 prisoners sent five prisoners to a hospital prompted the lockdown at both the Gunnison facility and the state prison in Salt Lake City. The man’s death was unrelated to the fight, officials said in the release.
