Man killed by SLCPD after alleged carjacking and gunfight, police say

Authorities said no officers were injured when they exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

(Jordan Miller I The Salt Lake Tribune) Salt Lake City Police shot and killed a man near 220 South Orange Street after an alleged carjacking.

A man was killed after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle near 600 South and I-15 and then fired on officers, police officials said Saturday night.

Salt Lake City police said they received a report at around 6 p.m. of an attempted carjacking in the area that was unsuccessful, but the man had allegedly stolen a car after the first attempt. The man fled in the stolen vehicle to 220 South Orange Street, and, police said, was killed after exchanging gunfire with police officers.

No officers were injured, officials said. SLCPD has invoked its officer-involved critical incident protocol and protocol teams are investigating the shooting.

Information on the exact timeline of the shooting or the number of shots fired was not immediately available on Saturday evening. The man’s identity has not yet been released.
