Bicyclist struck, killed by SUV in southern Utah

The driver drifted off the road, sending the bicyclist into a ravine, authorities said.

A bicyclist was killed when an SUV drifted off the road Wednesday and struck him in southern Utah.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, Tyler Droeger, 27, of Manawa, Wisconsin, was cycling northbound on the shoulder of U.S. Route 89 near mile marker 117 in Garfield County — about 3 miles north of Hatch and 12 miles south of Panguitch — shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

That’s when the driver of a 2012 Subaru Forester, also headed north, drifted off the side of the road.

The Forester struck the Droeger in the back, sending him crashing into a ravine, according to Highway Patrol. He died at the scene.

The Forester also crashed and rolled into the ravine. According to the Highway Patrol, the driver suffered minor injuries. The driver’s name has not been released.

The crash remains under investigation.
