Kearns man is shot to death, and two teens have been arrested

A man was shot to death in Kearns on Tuesday night, and two minors are in police custody.

According to Unified police, Fernando Amaya-Higareda, 23, of Kearns was driving south on Impressions Drive about 8:20 p.m. He stopped near 5600 South, and two teenagers — one 17, the other 16 — approached his car and shot him, police said. The victim’s car rolled about 200 yards into a nearby park, where it stopped.

Amaya-Higareda was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenagers ran from the scene, but were apprehended shortly thereafter. A gun was also recovered.

Police believe the shooting was not random — that the victim and the suspects knew each other — but the killing remains under investigation.
