18-year-old arrested in fatal shooting at South Jordan graduation party

A 19-year-old died when he was shot once in the chest.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old at a graduation party in South Jordan early Sunday morning.

According to police, the suspect fired 13 shots after a fight at the party, and one struck Kelly Glaubensklee in the chest, killing him.

When they arrived at the home, near 1450 W. 11400 South, at about 2 a.m., witnesses told them “several” people were involved in a fight and punches were thrown. After that was broken up, a second fight involving the same people broke out.

Several of those involved in the fights got into a car and started to leave, witnesses said. “Several people surrounded the vehicle and started kicking the vehicle,” police wrote in the probable cause statement, causing damage to the rear passenger side of the car.

The car stopped, and the suspect “displayed a firearm while inside the vehicle, pointed the firearm at several individuals at the party and discharged a .40 caliber weapon,” according to the probable cause statement. Police found 13 .40 caliber shell casings at the scene.

According to police, Glaubensklee “is the same person who engaged in a physical fight with the juvenile male who was driving the vehicle” from which the shots were fired.

The suspect, the driver and other occupants of the vehicle were identified by witnesses. One of the occupants of the vehicle identified the suspect as the shooter, and said he was sitting in the back seat behind the driver when he fired the gun. Other witnesses also said the suspect leaned out the back window on the driver’s side and began shooting.

According to police, they obtained several videos of the fight and of the shooting from partygoers.

On Monday evening, a South Jordan police detective spoke with the suspect on the phone. He agreed to meet with police on Tuesday morning, and later turned over a .40 caliber handgun to his father. Police arrested the suspect at his home in West Jordan early Tuesday morning, and when his bedroom was searched they found silver hollow point bullets that “appear to be the same as the shell casings” found at the scene of the shooting. Two .40 caliber handguns were also found in the home.

According to South Jordan police, they are continuing to search for two more passengers who were in the vehicle when the shooting occurred.

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of aggravated murder and 13 counts of felony discharged of a weapon. He is being held without bail.

The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects until they have been formally charged.
