Gas prices continue to rise in Utah — and they’re well above the national average

Here are some of the cheapest places to fill up at the pump.

Gas prices are leveling off nationally, according to AAA, but they’re still rising in Utah. As of Tuesday, Utahns are paying 28 cents more per gallon ($3.16) than the national average ($2.88).

That’s the highest gas prices have been in the United State since May 2019 — up 2 cents per gallon from a week ago, 25 cents from a month ago and 74 cents from a year ago.

And Utah is the fifth on a list of high-price states, trailing California ($3.88), Hawaii ($3.59), Washington ($3.31) and Nevada ($3.29). The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Utah is 17 cents higher than it was a week ago, 70 cents more than it was a month ago, and 72 cents more than it was a year ago.

According to AAA, there’s been an increase in supply and a dip in demand, and 32 states had increases of 3 cents of less in the past week. “This does not mean gas prices have hit their peak,” said spokeswoman Jeanette McGee, “but is a positive sign for consumers.”

AAA is forecasting prices to fluctuate in the next week, but adds that “large jumps are not likely for the majority of consumers.”

The cheapest places to find gas in Utah, according to GasBuddy.com, are the membership warehouse stores (Costco and Sam’s Club) and Price, a city of about 9,000 in Carbon County where it’s $2.82 at multiple locations — Conoco, Pilot, Sinclair, Smith’s and Walmart.
