Ogden police recover stolen ambulance, look for culprit

Vehicle was swiped while first responders treated a patient.

The Ogden Fire Department’s stolen ambulance has been found undamaged, and police are still searching for the person who stole it.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday, an ambulance crew arrived at the Union Gardens apartments, 468 3rd Street, and, apparently, left the keys in the vehicle. Crew members treated the patient and then brought the person back to where they’d left the ambulance, only to find that it wasn’t there.

A second ambulance arrived to take the patient to a hospital, according to police, who did not provide an update on the patient’s condition.

The Ogden Police Department posted a plea for information on social media, and at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday a resident called to report the vehicle was in a neighbor’s backyard. The ambulance was not damaged, and none of the equipment inside was missing.

“Although the recovery was a success, the theft of the ambulance compromised patient care,” according to a news release from Ogden police. “The delay in patient care while waiting for a second ambulance to arrive could have had [a] negative outcome for this patient.”

The release went on to say that driving an ambulance “requires training and, when driven improperly, creates a dangerous situation for the unknowing citizens who share the roadway.”

Anyone with information about the theft of the ambulance is asked to call Ogden police at 801-395-8221.
