A spokeswoman for the city of South Jordan acknowledged Sunday morning in a news release that firefighters responding to a report of a fire at 3371 W. Snow Moon Place on Saturday encountered not a fire but the aftermath of an explosion.

The first firefighters to arrive “located an adult male in critical condition with lower leg injuries. The patient was treated and transported by AirMed to the University of Utah Medical Center for further care,” the release stated.

The site of the explosion was the scene of a July standoff that resulted in Ryan Lynn McManigal’s arrest for allegedly stockpiling explosives. McManigal was charged in July with attempted murder and felony use of a weapon of mass destruction after officers reportedly found 20 pounds of explosives in the home.

South Jordan authorities did not identify the injured man, but McManigal’s sister, Bridget Black, told FOX 13 that her cousin was making repairs at the home when a “booby trap bomb” went off.

The news release added that “as a result of the July 2020 incident at the same location involving homemade explosives, the South Jordan Police Department, West Valley and UFA Bomb Squad, FBI and ATF are conducting a joint investigation into the events leading up to the explosion.”
