A fast-moving wildfire threatened homes in Juab County on Wednesday — requiring residents to evacuate for a few hours before crews got it under control.

The fire, near the small town of Rocky Ridge in central Utah, started in the evening around 4:30 p.m. An hour later, it had grown to about 250 acres, spreading through dry brush and grass.

The town has about 800 residents — sitting just south of Santaquin in Utah County — and some homes were evacuated as the blaze neared. Officials couldn’t say how many were affected, but by 10 p.m., people were allowed back in.

The fire is now about 20% contained.

Crews were fighting the blaze with airplanes and also dug lines in the ground to try to keep it away from structures. It continues to move to the southwest.
