Salt Lake City police investigating man found dead in pipe

A man was found dead Friday inside an 18-inch diameter pipe, but police say they do not suspect foul play in his death.

Salt Lake City police were called to 1110 South and 300 West, near a construction site and behind a shopping center, around 10 a.m., after someone reported there may be a body in the pipe, police spokesman Greg Wilking said.

Officers arrived to find the dead man inside. Police found no obvious signs of trauma of the man’s body, but are treating the death as suspicious.

The pipe the man was in was positioned vertically and flush to the ground, Wilking said. He noted it wasn’t a place someone might crawl into for shelter and that it’s possible the man fell in.

Wilking said it’s unclear how long the body was in the pipe. The state medical examiner will try to determine the man’s cause of death. The man’s name hasn’t been released.
