Utah deputy, trooper fatally shoot man who allegedly pointed gun at them

A man was killed by police Saturday evening after he allegedly pointed a gun at an Emery County deputy and Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

A sheriff’s deputy first encountered the man around 5:15 p.m. somewhere in Emery County, when the deputy pulled him over on suspicion of drunken driving. During the traffic stop, the man allegedly got out of his car and pointed a gun at the deputy, according to a UHP news release.

The driver then got back into his car and drove away. The deputy chased after and called for back-up.

A highway patrol trooper joined the chase and stopped the driver by deploying spike strips.

Once the driver stopped — with police parked behind him — he got out of the car and again allegedly pointed his gun at police, according to the release.

Both a deputy and trooper fired at the man, who was hit and died shortly after.

Carbon County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting.
