3 people injured in shooting outside concert in Salt Lake City

Nate Carlisle | The Salt Lake Tribune Officials investigate the scene of a shooting at The Complex on Friday in downtown Salt Lake City.

A shooting outside a downtown Salt Lake City music club late Friday injured three people.

The most serious injury appears to be a gunshot wound to the chest, said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Carlos Valencia.

One juvenile was shot in the foot, Valencia said. A third victim made his or her own way to a hospital. All victims are expected to recover.

Police said Saturday the shooting was possibly gang-related and occurred after an argument on the street.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon. The shooting was reported at 10:13 p.m. — about 25 minutes after Vivint Smart Home Arena, two blocks from the scene of the gunfire, was evacuated due to a suspicious package. The two episodes were not related, but they ensured flashing red and white police lights illuminated the west edge of downtown.

Valencia said three people were walking outside The Complex, a large club at 536 W. 100 South where the hip-hop group Shoreline Mafia was performing. A white car drove west.

Someone in the car started shooting, Valencia said. One of the victims returned fire with his or her own gun.

Liam Herrera, 17, who was at the performance of Shoreline Mafia, said he went out to the smoking patio and heard eight or nine shots being fired outside of the building.

“All of a sudden all you hear are shots being fired,” he said.

Police blocked off 100 South between 500 West and 600 West to investigate the shooting. It made for a busy scene when the concert ended minutes later. The music patrons had to walk around and sometimes under yellow police tape to go home.

“There was a ton of people who saw a lot of things,” Valencia said. “We’re trying to find the best witnesses.”

Some motorists parked on 100 South couldn’t get in their cars because police officers were looking around them for bullet casings or other evidence.

Anyone with information on the shooting can call police at 801-799-3000 and reference case number 19-22043.
