Police identify Washington County man killed while working on a homemade explosive device

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man died Friday night in the town of New Harmony while making a homemade explosive device.

Jordan Joseph Rinehart, 25, died in the explosion.

According to police, a witness said he and Rinehart went to a farm property on the 400 North block of Harmony Drive to care for horses. After completing their work, the man said Rinehart asked him to come to a garage area where he was working on the explosive device. When the witness turned to walk away, the device detonated, killing Rinehart, according to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.. The other man wasn’t injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

Members of the Washington County Bomb Squad and Washington County detectives cleared the residence and didn’t find any other explosive devices or further threat to the public.

Police said detectives have found nothing indicating the victim intended to target someone with the explosive device.
