Woman charged with handcuffing man to Utah motel toilet

A 36-year-old woman was charged Thursday with multiple felony offenses after she allegedly handcuffed a man to a toilet in a motel room for several days.

The woman was arrested July 21, about six days after she is accused of chaining the man to the toilet.

The victim told police he rented a room at a South Salt Lake motel room, and on July 14, the woman — who the man knows — showed up with several other people. The plan, the man told police, was to set up printers to forge documents.

According to the woman’s probable cause statement, shortly after she arrived at the hotel room, she accused the victim of stealing documents from her. After that confrontation, the woman allegedly secured the man to a toilet in the motel using a bike chain and handcuffs.

The man told police that the woman also punched him in the mouth, knocking out a tooth, court documents say.

The man stayed cuffed to the toilet for around two days, and was then taken to a Salt Lake City home. He was chained to a chair there until July 20, when a man who lives at the home freed him while the woman was away. The victim went to a nearby home and called police.

After her arrest, the woman told police that she was staying with the victim at a motel room but denied the allegations.

The man whose home the victim was allegedly trapped in told police he’d seen the woman handcuff the victim. When police searched the home, officers found a bike chain and handcuffs attached to a chair in the living room.

A search of the motel room — which had been cleaned since the victim left — revealed gouge marks on the toilet and other residue investigators said were consistent with the hand cuffs and chain.

The woman remains in Salt Lake County jail on charges of aggravating kidnapping and aggravated assault. She also has a warrant for her arrest out of Idaho. Her bond is set at 100,000 cash-only.
