Utahns spend less on household expenses than most Americans, study says

Utah residents spends $61 less per month on household expenses than the national average, according to doxo.

The web and mobile bill-pay service analyzed what Americans are paying in the 25 largest metro areas — and it included Provo and Orem as part of Salt Lake City. According to doxo’s analysis, the average American household pay $984 a month for the nine “most common” bills (excluding rent or mortgage payments); the average Salt Lake household pays $923.

That’s 17% of the average monthly household income for locals — $5,537. And that puts Utah tied for 19th on the list, with Miami the most expensive and Charlotte, N.C., the least expensive.

Broken down into the nine categories doxo analyzed, Salt Lake residents paid more than the national average in three categories and less in six categories:

  • Alarm and security • $89 ($7 more than the national average)

  • Auto insurance • $183 ($55 less)

  • Auto loans • $414 ($38 more)

  • Cable, internet and phone • $108 ($10 less)

  • Mobile phone • $128 ($30 more)

  • Health insurance • $107 ($29 less)

  • Dental insurance • $20 ($15 less)

  • Life insurance • $106 ($18 less)

  • Utilities • $207 ($30 less)
