3 more gang members arrested in Fashion Place mall shooting investigation

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) People evacuate with their hands aloft after a shooting at the Fashion Place Mall in Murray on Sunday Jan. 13, 2019.

Three more men have been arrested in connection with the shooting at Fashion Place mall on Sunday, but police say the suspected shooters have not been apprehended.

Flaviano Aguilar, 20; Arian Huerta, 20; and Steven Perez-Hernandez, 18, have been booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of rioting and other charges.

Aguilar, Huerta, Perez-Hernandez and “fellow Florencia 13 gang members” confronted members of a “rival gang” at the Murray mall Sunday afternoon, according to a probable cause statement.

Members of both gangs had “agreed to go outside and continue the confrontation,” when one member of each gang pulled out a gun and “exchange[ed] gunfire.”

Two people — also identified by police as gang members — were wounded. A woman was treated at a hospital and released; a man remained hospitalized Friday after undergoing surgery Sunday. Their names have not been released.

In addition to rioting, Aguilar is being investigated for obstruction of justice because he sent money to a gang member who is wanted in connection with the shooting, to “prevent the apprehension of another suspect.”

Huerta is being investigated for two counts of failure to stop at a police officer’s command. On Wednesday, he fled from a car when stopped by police, authorities say, and he “tried to run again” when police surrounded a house where he took refuge.

Perez-Hernandez was also booked for investigation of failure to stop at a police officer’s command. According to police, he ran during a traffic stop by members of the Metro Gang Unit on Wednesday in the area of 2450 S. 1450 West.

Two 19-year-olds, Jesus J. Payan-Mendoza and Jorge Luis Crecencio-Gonzalez — who were also identified by police as members of the Florencia 13 gang — were arrested Monday.
