Pedestrian in critical condition after Wednesday morning crash on 600 South in SLC

One of the main traffic routes into Salt Lake City was temporarily closed after a car crashed into a pedestrian on 600 South near 400 West Wednesday morning, but the road was reopened just in time for rush hour.

The person who was hit — a middle-aged man who had not yet been identified by police as of Wednesday morning — was in “extremely critical” condition, according to Sgt. Brandon Shearer.

A call reporting the crash to police came in at 4:54 a.m., Shearer said. Police were not sure whether the victim was in a crosswalk when he was hit, he added, and it was “pretty dark in the area” at the time.

All five lanes of eastbound 600 South, as well as exits from Interstate 15 and Interstate 80, were blocked off for about three hours due to the crash, according to the Utah Department of Transportation, but reopened about 8 a.m.
