A 3-year-old girl was killed and her 8-month-old brother critically injured Sunday in a crash at a Provo intersection, police said.

About 4:48 p.m., the driver of a Pleasant Grove utility truck going south on University Avenue rear-ended a station wagon that was facing south in the left turn lane at 3700 North, according to Provo police Detective Nick Dupaix. He said the station wagon was third in line to turn east and the impact caused a chain reaction crash involving the sedan and minivan ahead of it.

The girl, who was in the station wagon, died at the scene and the baby was flown to a hospital in critical condition, Dupaix said. As of Monday morning, the infant’s condition had slightly improved and medical personnel believed he would survive his injuries.

The mother also was in critical condition, he said, but her condition had stabilized by Sunday evening. Six other people also were injured but are expected to recover.
