A woman has died after a TRAX train struck her at a Salt Lake City platform Friday afternoon.
Marie Gay Cardwell, 57, had been walking toward the train as it pulled into the station near 900 East on 400 South at 4:56 p.m., according to Carl Arky, a Utah Transit Authority spokesman. She stumbled on the bumpy yellow warning strip and fell into the passing train, which knocked her back, Arky said.
Cardwell lived in an assisted living facility with her husband before she died, Arky said. She had been having seizures, he added, and had been known to fall.
Investigators believe she died on impact.
“It’s an unfortunate accident,” Arky said, adding that investigators who watched video footage from the platform said she likely would have fallen onto the tracks if the train weren’t there. “It happened at exactly the wrong time.”
She was hit by an eastbound train, and UTA shut down the tracks in both directions for two hours.
“She was by herself,” Arky said. “She didn’t have anybody with her.”
