A coffee shop known for printing edible versions of customers’ photos onto their lattes has reopened, after being closed for about a year.

Bix Bakery & Cafe relaunched in August at 479 E. 2100 South, in the same building as the Sugar House location of Saffron Valley. Both businesses are owned by restaurateur and entrepreneur Lavanya Mahate, who launched the Saffron Valley Indian restaurants.

Mahate first opened Bix in September 2023, after having the idea for a cafe in the back of her mind for a while, she said. But she closed it almost exactly a year later.

She said she had struggled at the time with patrons of the clinic next door parking and trespassing in her business’s parking lot, and she had also wanted to focus on growing her nonprofit, RISE Culinary Institute.

Multiple attempts by The Salt Lake Tribune to contact the clinic about the parking lot were unsuccessful.

Mahate closed Bix in September 2024, and instead used the cafe as event space for Saffron Valley and RISE. (The second location of Bix Bakery & Cafe, in the co-working space Kiln in The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City, has stayed open continually.)

In January, Mahate discovered the clinic patrons were no longer using her parking lot, so she decided, “Let’s give it another shot,” she said.

Mahate said she started the process of reopening Bix this summer, and officially reopened the cafe on Aug. 1.

When Bix first opened in 2023, it became known for its coffee printing service, which customers could add to any drink with a lot of foam on top, including certain coffee drinks and hot chocolate, for $2. Now that Bix has returned, the coffee printing is back, too.

To have a photo of your choice — whether it be of your cat, yourself or your bestie — printed on your beverage, just scan the QR code at the front counter and either upload a photo from your camera roll or take a new one, and a special machine will “print” it onto your drink.

Mahate said the coffee printing is part of Bix’s goal to “find joy in every day.”

Bix also has several new items on its menu, including the Morning Melt Sandwich, made with sausage, egg and cheese; the Earth Burger, which is a black-bean patty on a brioche bun; and the Golden Sunrise Sandwich, made with three different types of cheese along with apricot jam, “for a touch of sweetness,” Mahate said.

There’s also kombucha from Han’s Kombucha, coffee from King’s Peak Coffee Roasters, pastries, cake slices, and housemade chai, made with black tea, ginger, cardamon and other spices, Mahate said.

She said she plans to have a grand opening celebration for Bix Bakery & Cafe in mid-September; follow @bixcafeutah on Instagram for updates.
