Music to help The Heavy Metal Shop

Utah’s music community is coming together to help one of their own, with a benefit concert for Salt Lake City’s The Heavy Metal Shop owner Kevin Kirk, whose wife, Angie, died suddenly on March 5. The show — set for Sunday, April 10, at The Commonwealth Room, 195 W. 2100 South, South Salt Lake — will feature rock acts Triggers & Slips, Thunderfist, Utah County Swillers and Sammy Brue. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, at thestateroompresents.com.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Kevin and Angie Kirk, seen here in 2017, have owned the iconic Heavy Metal Shop in downtown Salt Lake City for more than 30 years. Angie Kirk died March 5, 2022; musicians have scheduled a benefit concert to help Kevin Kirk for April 10, 2022, at The Commonwealth Room in South Salt Lake.

Putting needle to canvas

If you’re an artist in search of your medium, maybe needlework is your path to expression. The Utah Museum of Contemporary Arts (20 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City) is offering a free embroidery workshop on Thursday, April 14, at 4 p.m., in the UMOCA Courtyard. Shannon Downey from Badass Cross Stitch will teach the workshop. Register at UtahMOCA.org to attend; bring an embroidery hoop, embroidery floss, fabric, a water-soluble pen, tapestry or embroidery needle, and scissors.

Tig Notaro’s ‘personal comedy’

Some critics call Tig Notaro’s stand-up comedy “dark” — particularly after her famous 2012 set in which she described her breast-cancer diagnosis. Notaro prefers the term “personal comedy.” Notaro co-wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical series “One Mississippi,” has acted in “Star Trek: Discovery” and Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” and co-directed (with her wife, Stephanie Allynne) this year’s Sundance Film Festival hit “Am I OK?” Notaro will perform Friday, April 15, at The Complex, 536 W. 100 South, Salt Lake City. Tickets, from $39.50 to $59.50, are available at thecomplexslc.com.
