Utah quarterback Devon Dampier announces his plans for next season

Utah’s starting quarterback is set to return to the Utes in 2026.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes quarterback Devon Dampier (4) looks for an opening in Cal Poly's defense earlier this season.

Devon Dampier isn’t going anywhere.

Utah’s star quarterback announced his plans to return to the Utes next season on Tuesday, posting a video on social media.

After former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck left Salt Lake City for Michigan, Dampier considered his options. He received interest from multiple programs, multiple sources said.

Despite being hampered by multiple injuries, Dampier finished the 2025 season with 2,490 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and a 63.5% completion rate. He also rushed the ball 146 times for 835 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

His highlight moment of the season came against Kansas State when he erased a late double-digit deficit and led the Utes on a game-winning drive. Dampier finished that contest with 259 passing yards, 94 rushing yards and four total touchdowns.

He was also named the Las Vegas Bowl MVP in Utah’s 44-22 win over Nebraska.

With Dampier’s decision officially locked down, the Utes now have their future and present at the quarterback spot secured.

Freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin confirmed his return to the program on Sunday after signing his deal in December.

Like Dampier, the freshman quarterback’s future remained up in the air following the coaching and player turnover that occurred after Whittingham’s departure to Michigan.

Dampier is returning to an offense filled with weapons in 2026, including the additions of transfer wide receivers Braden Pegan from Utah State and Kyri Shoels from San Jose State. The Utes are also bringing in five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Obot.

Utah is also returning leading rusher Wayshawn Parker, tight end Hunter Andrews, wide receiver Creed Whittemore and wide receiver Larry Simmons next season.
