Utah quarterback Byrd Ficklin intends to sign a new deal to stay with the Utes

Ficklin would’ve had interest from multiple programs had he entered the transfer portal, his agent said.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes quarterback Byrd Ficklin (15) warms up at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Nov. 22.

Utah quarterback Byrd Ficklin has agreed to the terms of a one-year deal to remain with the Utes, his agent Amber Mathurin told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Ficklin intends to sign the dotted line on Thursday, she said.

The freshman quarterback received interest from multiple programs in the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and even the Big Ten before signing his new deal with Utah, his agent said, but he ultimately wanted to return to the Utes for his sophomore campaign.

Utah was the only Power Four program to offer Ficklin as a three-star recruit out of Muskogee High School in Oklahoma.

Ficklin made an immediate impact as a true freshman in 2025. He finished the year with 56 carries, 503 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns this season.

He also completed 60% of his passes for 301 passing yards and three touchdowns. In place of an injured Devon Dampier, Ficklin started one game against Colorado. He tallied 140 passing yards, 151 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, ultimately guiding the Utes to a blowout victory over the Buffaloes.

Ficklin was also awarded Big 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. He also earned one Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor.

No. 15 Utah is set to take on Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 31.
