The Utah Utes will be without starting cornerback Elijah “Scooby” Davis for the first half of their game versus Kansas State.
The junior got into a fight with Baylor wide receiver Ashtyn Hawkins with 8:18 remaining in Saturday’s game and was ejected.
Davis was initially exchanging words with Bears receiver Kole Wilson, who had just caught his first touchdown pass of the game. Wilson stood over Davis and taunted him. Hawkins then ran over to Davis and hit the receiver in the face mask.
Hawkins and Davis proceeded to throw punches at each other before wrestling one another to the ground. Both players were then ejected from the game and, by rule, will be suspended for the first half of their next contests.
“Scooby lost his cool a little bit and obviously the other guy had something to do with it as well, or he wouldn’t have gotten flagged,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said postgame. “So we’ll sort that out.”
Utah’s head coach was initially uncertain whether he’d be losing Davis for the first half of the Utes’ upcoming game against Kansas State.
Whittingham was disappointed when he was told Davis would indeed be held out of action. The absence will be a loss for Utah. Davis intercepted Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson for a pick-six in No. 13 Utah’s 55-28 blowout win.
“Heat of the moment, competitive, but you’ve got to keep your cool,” Whittingham said. “I’m not making excuses for Scooby. I don’t know enough about the situation right now to tell you a definitive course of action for us, but we’ll find out.”
