Utah football earns a surprising College Football Playoff ranking. Could Utes and Cougars both get in?

The Utes and Cougars both debuted inside the top 15 in the first CFP rankings of the season.

The College Football Playoff committee released its first top 25 ranking of the 2025 regular season on Tuesday night.

Both Utah and BYU debuted inside the top 15.

Maybe the most surprising of the two was the Utes landing at No. 13 ahead of ACC programs Louisville (No. 14), Virginia (No. 15) and the SEC’s Vanderbilt (No. 16).

The Utes are coming off a blowout victory over Cincinnati last Saturday, which saw them notch their first ranked victory over the then-No. 17 Bearcats.

It was no surprise, however, that BYU landed as the top Big 12 program in the nation, debuting at No. 7 ahead of its ESPN “College GameDay” matchup with Texas Tech this Saturday.

The Red Raiders landed one spot below the Cougars at No. 8.

BYU, Texas Tech and the Utes were the only Big 12 teams to land in the top 25. Houston and Cincinnati, which both stand at 7-2 on the season and are ahead of the Utes in the Big 12 standings, were left out.
