Utah quarterback Devon Dampier is suited up but will only play in an “emergency situation” against the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday night.
After getting injured late in the third quarter of Utah’s matchup versus BYU, Dampier was listed as “questionable” on the team’s Wednesday availability report. But by Friday night, Dampier’s status had been upgraded to “probable.”
ESPN reported that Dampier was “really pushing” to play and was a “true game-time decision.”
On Monday, Dampier said there “wasn’t a specific play” that caused his injury last weekend.
“It’s week nine, everyone gets banged up at this point,” he said.
In Dampier’s place, the Utes turned to freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin to make his first career start.
“Byrd Ficklin, we have a ton of confidence in [him] every time he’s entered a game,” head coach Kyle Whittingham said. “So far this year, he’s done positive things. If we end up going that route based on health, then we have the confidence he can get it done.”
