Utah football loses a playmaker to a season-ending injury

Hunter Andrews played at both tight end and running back this season.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes tight end Hunter Andrews (10) goes down as Utah hosts Cal Poly, NCAA football in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025.

Utah has lost another player to a season-ending injury.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham announced on Tuesday that the Utes will be without redshirt freshman Hunter Andrews for the rest of the season. The gadget tight end suffered the injury in the Utes’ 34-10 loss to Texas Tech last Saturday.

“He’s out for the season, unfortunately,” Whittingham said. “[That’s a] big loss for us. He did a lot of things for us offensively, and we’ll really miss him. But you know, somebody’s got to step up, pick up the slack, and we’re working through that this week to find out who that guy’s going to be.”

Andrews was emerging as an important part of new offensive coordinator Jason Beck’s plans, playing at both tight end and running back.

He’ll finish the season with 13 rushes for 113 rushing yards and one touchdown. In the passing game, he caught 10 passes for 65 receiving yards.
