YouTube TV and FOX have good news for Utah football fans — for now

Utah fans subscribed to YouTube TV would have missed out on the Utes’ season-opening matchup without a deal being reached.

YouTube TV and Fox have reached a “short-term extension” that will keep Fox content — including Saturday’s Utah vs. UCLA game — on the streaming platform.

“We are committed to advocating on behalf of our subscribers as we work toward a fair deal and will keep you updated on our progress,” YouTube said in a blog post Wednesday, just before the deadline for an agreement.

While it’s not clear how long the extension will last, the move has come after FCC chairman Brendan Carr asked Google to come to a deal with Fox in order to “keep watching the news and sports they want — including this week’s Big Game: Texas at Ohio State." That game takes place at 10 a.m. MT Saturday on Fox. Utah vs. UCLA airs on the station at 9 p.m. MT.

On Monday, YouTube TV announced that Fox channels would be pulled off the air if the two media giants were unable to come to an agreement by Wednesday at 3 p.m. MT.

YouTube TV is now the third-largest pay-TV platform in the United States, notching 9.4 million subscribers to the platform as of April.
