Why the Utah women’s basketball game Friday against Arizona State was canceled

Utah will get some extra rest and practice due to the cancellation.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Coach Lynne Roberts as the University of Utah hosts Idaho, NCAA basketball in Salt Lake City on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022.

Injuries happen practically every day in the world of sports. But it’s not every day one team is so ravaged by the injury bug that it can’t field a roster.

But that’s exactly what happened to the No. 10 Utah women’s basketball team’s opponent scheduled for Friday.

Arizona State forfeited Friday’s game against Utah due to not being able to field a team because of injuries. Utah picks up a win in the conference standings due to the forfeit, per Pac-12 rules. However, the team’s overall records won’t be adjusted.

Arizona State also forfeited Sunday’s game against Colorado.

Utah will get an unexpected couple of days of rest and extra practice going into Sunday’s marquee matchup against No. 14 Arizona. That game tips off at noon at the Huntsman Center.
