Utah women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts signs extension after ‘breakthrough’ season

The Utes coach’s new deal goes through June of 2027

(Chris Samuels | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah women’s basketball head coach Lynne Roberts, center, and the team reacts after learning where and who they will play in the NCAA women’s college basketball tournament at the team’s practice facility, Sunday, March 13, 2022.

Longtime Utah women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts will stay with the Utes for a few more years.

Roberts signed a contract extension that keeps her as head coach through June 2027, the university announced Tuesday. Details of her extension were not immediately available.

Roberts led the Utes to a 21-12 overall record last season, including an appearance in the Pac-12 championship game and the team’s first win in the NCAA Tournament since 2008. Utah beat the 10-seed University of Arkansas before falling to 2-seed Texas in the second round.

“The breakthrough success her team enjoyed in 2021-22 — playing in the Pac-12 championship game and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament — was not an overnight sensation but a reflection of the incredibly solid and healthy foundation she has established to sustain success,” Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan said in a news release.

Roberts has coached the Utes for the last seven years, amassing a 112-99 overall record.

“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue to build a women’s basketball powerhouse in the Pac-12 here at the University of Utah,” Roberts said in a news release.
