Departing Ute MyKayla Skinner may return to Huntsman Center for USA Gymnastics’ American Classic next month

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) MyKayla Skinner competes on the balance beam for Utah, in the PAC-12 Gymnastics Championships at the Maverik Center, Saturday, March 23, 2019.

MyKayla Skinner’s days of competing in the Huntsman Center might not be behind her just yet.

Skinner, the Utah junior who announced she doesn’t plan to return to the Utes next season if it appears she can land a spot on the 2020 Olympic team, is likely to compete in the Utes’ home arena in June in USA Gymnastics’ American Classic.

The competition, scheduled for June 22, is a qualifying meet for the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Mo., in August.

In addition, USA Gymnastics will host the Hopes Classic June 21 for ages 10-13. USA Gymnastics released details on the meet this week.

Tickets are on sale now through utahtickets.com or 801-581-UTIX.

Skinner, an alternate on the 2016 Olympic team, recently announced she wanted to see how she does in the American Classic and the U.S. Classic on July 20 in Louisville to decide if she wants to pursue an Olympic spot.

The Utes are holding a scholarship for her until August.

Skinner was the NCAA all-around runner-up in 2017 and 2018. She has 111 career victories to rank second in school history and her seven Pac-12 conference wins is tied for second in conference history.

Even if she does compete in the Olympics, Skinner said she would like to return to Utah for her senior year, although doing so is virtually unheard of because of the physical demands of gymnastics.
