Utah State coach says he’ll open his own wallet to match recruiting donations

Basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun led the Aggies to 26 wins a season ago.

(Brynn Anderson | AP) Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun speaks with Ian Martinez (4) during the first half in the first round of the NCAA college basketball tournament against UCLA, Thursday, March 20, 2025, in Lexington, Ky.

Like every other college basketball coach in the country, Utah State’s Jerrod Calhoun is looking for more money.

Money for recruiting players.

Money for keeping players.

But Calhoun is putting at least some of his money on the line.

The Aggies’ head coach says he’s matching up to $150,000 in donations to the basketball program’s Wayne Estes Fund. The Big Blue Club, a fundraising arm of USU athletics, said it will make its own $150,000 match.

“In the new era of intercollegiate athletics, it is paramount that Aggie Nation continue to support those outstanding student-athletes, while looking towards the future and finding the next amazing group of Aggie leaders,” Calhoun said in a news release Thursday. “Financial gifts to the Wayne Estes Fund are transformational for the program and provide the necessary resources to put a championship-level team on the court.”

Calhoun led USU to a 26-8 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament last season. He was rewarded with a new five-year contract that will start at $1.8 million per season.
